Vectorized Fingers...toughie!

Ta-da, the big reveal of my very first request! I have to admit, I was a little bit skeptical about accepting a request - but considering that the subject was a photographer (who also happens to be a fellow blogger), I had faith that he'd have an artistic understanding of what could be vectorized.

After looking through the images he sent across, I picked this particular image for two main reasons. 1) I was already thinking of venturing into black & whites. 2) I knew it would be a challenge. Plus, I felt the need to push the limits a bit after being diagnosed with OCD. ;)

So what makes this picture so challenging? Eeks, the fingers! When it comes to vectoring a person's face for instance it's up to the artist to hone in on the key features to make that person's face true to life. But hands? Fingers? Thankfully the original image size was massive - - making it that much more possible to sit down and analyze how to tackle vectoring the hands. Here's a close up of the hands and the camera.....

....and I am so, so, so satisfied! :O) I was a little worried when I started because initially the fingers looked like blobs of flesh (ew!) which over time, with continuous added touches turned out to look as real as possible, yay! Anyway, fingers aside, here''s the final product!

I'm throwing modesty outta the window with what I'm going to say here....but I think I'm going to start charging for future vector requests. ;P

PS - If you are interested, click here to view the HQ image of this vector.

U r dng such fine wrk, with each of ur passing post. Kudos!!
Sorry cant comment on technicalities, but wht I noticed is that even wrinkles of the hands are noticeable.. Gr8 wrk!

Heyyyyy!!

This is fantabulous! wowie!! It feels awesome, being 'Comic'ised.
I'm finding it hard to describe the funny or comic feeling, rather, that I'm now going thru!

Visitors to Archana's page and the usual bloggers who drop by, Archana has been working on this image for nearly a week now. Initially I didn't realise how difficult this might have been but the time she took is a statement in itself about the level of dedication needed for such a work.
I do work on photographs myself but the lengthiest of my PS work would probably be a hundredth, in terms of time consumption, compared to this.
On that note, I totally agree if Archana would prefer charging from here on, for all that dedication!

But here's one tip though, hide your fingers as they are tough to work on, then Archana might give you a huge discount! lol! :)

Well, what can I say, I'm in 'Archie Comics' now! Except that Archie made the comic instead of being in it! :)

Whoa!! Archana.. This is stunning. You definitely could charge future requests! These are too good to be distributed for free! :D

P.S. How did Varun butter you up?! Treat? Or a Gucci bag or something?! :P

WoW! This eez AWESOME! Awesome awesome awesome! I love the way you have done the fingers of the left hand - it has come out perfect! The right hand too! Even the face... OK THE WHOLE THING!

This is awesome work! Being into photography myself, I try to keep PhotoShop work to a minimum because I believe the real photographer creates art using the camera, not the computer (well, the digital SLRs are mini-computers, anyway! :D). However, I admire what you are doing because you are doing all the vectoring work manually without depending on PhotoShop to do it for you. That is art!

I'm a fan now. :)

Archana said...

preposterous girl: Haha thank you! And yes, I had to get detailed with the hand for it to end up looking like a hand, glad you picked up on that. :)

PS - Even if I were to actually begin charging, certain people would fall under 'discounted pricing'. ;)

varunshridhar: YAY! I know you already gave me feedback on the vector off of the blog-world, but thanks again! I'm really glad you love the Comic-version of yourself! :)

And yeah, I did complete it over a week but that's cause I just do a little bit here and there, there's no way someone could do a vector in a whole sitting. Probably spent around 5-6hours on this one in total. Thanks for appreciating the dedication to my art work!

And lucky you, for being the first person to ask me to do a vector for you! The reason I really did say yes was not simply because it was the first request, but also because it was out of genuine interest in my vector art. And look what it has spiraled into now, full on publicity for a potential vectoring business, haha.

Kadambari: Thank you so much! Yes, I think the concept of freebies might just be over, lol.

And no buttering up, as mentioned above, he was one of the first people to show a real genuine interest in my vector art and he happened to ask me for the favor at a time when I was tossing up ideas for what next, so it was partially his good timing too I suppose. :)

Kokonad: Yayy thanks! :) That's funny that you can notice the small differences between the hands - the right hand was actually more difficult to do cause of the positioning.

L'Etranger: Oh la la, a fan! Muy gracias. :)

Thank you so much for your comment - you really hit the nail on the head here, because people can very easily, in minutes, vector using automatic settings on Photoshop...which to me, looks rather mediocre. So, as you said, when you actually sit down and vector each piece on your own, the end result truly is art. :) Thank you for pointing that out!

Dude!! You're like supa AWESOME!!!!

the fingers definitely are the BEST part of the image.

Will be definitely calling you once I start earning. ;)

Babe, I LOVE this one! It looks incredible! You have such patience and such an artistic eye. Love it!

And yes, I saw Nadal's shirt. Only real men can wear pink! As much as I love that hunk of left arm muscle, I'm still behind Roger! Rooting for his career Grand Slam!

Ishu said...

Archana, Vectorized Varun looks simply amazing.. ;) You seem to et better and better at this with every single work :)

Sindhu said...

Whoa! You are RIDICULOUSLY GOOD at this. I keep thinking each vector you come out with is amazingly awesome and it can't get better than that, but, it does! Again and again. I don't even know what to say!

This one is just ... really, really, really, really, really, really amazing. No amount of compliments or positive feedback I can give will do it any justice, because I'm absolutely speechless with the level of your work. The fingers are great! I can't imagine how much time you would have spent on them, but the detailing really worked well. They look SO REAL. I also like the work on his hair, the camera, his face, all of it. Wowwww. I'm stunned.

He is one lucky subject, to have this piece of art made of himself!

Keep up the good work, lil sis. I'm incredibly proud of your talent! :)

Archana said...

bondgal_rulz:Hehe thank you! With everyone talking about saving up, I think I need to start figuring out how much to price these vectors at, lol ;)

Adisha: Aww thank you to both you and your hubby for the compliments! :) Vectoring is a very detail-oriented type of art, and it can get tedious...but then again, when you love what you do it really doesn't feel like work. :)

Vinnie: Haha Vinnie, thanks! I'm sure your comment has Varun up on cloud nine. :P And I love when you leave your footprints here, so yay for being followed. ;)

Shakira: Thaaank you! :) With each new vector I'm learning to tackle another artistic challenge, so it's definitely great to hear that you think I have an eye for it.

As for Nadal, all I want is that shirt cause of the color, haha. But as for him, no way, it's going to be ROGER all the way to the final! Haha, once a Fed Fan, always a Fed Fan. ;)

Ishu: Thanks girlie! I actually found a really neat picture of Brad & Angelina that I thought I might vector. It's saved under my potential future projects, hehe, the day it's up you will be the first to know. I just don't know when that day is yet. :P

Sindhu: THANK youuuu! Hehe funny enough, the more often I've been vectoring what used to seem like tumultuous tasks are getting easier and easier. Like now, doing faces & hair, it's become second-nature. :) Though the hands & the camera, those were definitely a challenge, but I was not willing to settle at mediocre - especially since this was the first piece I was doing for someone else (besides the Jenny one, but that was a gift - this was a request, totally different ball game, lol).

But yay, I'm glad you love it! Thanks for the constant support - always nice getting compliments on a talent. :) Sooo what do you think, the beginnings of a budding home business? Haha, for that, I'd need your finance brain to figure out the price tags. ;) <3

Did I see a vectored photograph of yourself somewhere? :P

Archana said...

rads: Thank you! And I'm glad his post peaked your interest to come check out what I have posted up on my blog. :)

L'Etranger: Lol, that's news to me - unless you're referring to my previous post? If not, then where is this somewhere?! *confused*

Hey Archana, Thanks for dropping in. I'm absolutely awed by your work. I think you can make a living off it, if you don't already that is! Keep up the fantastic work, will stumble by again for sure!

I'm late in treading across your blog but nevertheless as they say,a treasure is usually discovered well ahead into the time curve:)The vector thing is amazing...never in my wildest dreams I had this glim thought that the mathematical term which ruined my academic scores would be used for an art so gratifying:) well done!

Archana said...

Idling in Top Gear: Thank you! And yup, no freebies, but hey once I figure out how much I'd charge, who knows, maybe you'll be one of the first customers? :P

Appy: Hey Aparna, thank you so much! :) Heh with all the positive feedback I've been getting, I think the time has come for me to start thinking about how to make some money out of this, lol.

calvy: Aw thank you! :) Math was never my favorite subject either, haha. Art however, I've always loved!

Choco said...

OMG!!!! Double Wow... And let me conclude by adding that the vector looks better than the snap and perhaps better than the flesh & blood presence too! :)
Keep up the fabulous work!
& yes do charge :))

Shobhit said...

Wow. This is something really amazing... In fact, some of the vectors look even better than the originals... !

Well done... :-)

You have done it yet again... Lovely, splendid, awesome!!!

I really admire you and sometimes envy you :)

L'Etranger said...

@Archana: LOL! Ok, it wasn't probably vectored, but a photoshopped picture. A very small one -- so I wasn't sure. Used as your ID. I saw it with your comment on one of the blogs I read. :-)

So, anyway, the question now is, have you been doing much more than just vectoring? Any other art forms?

Archana said...

Choco: Hahah, thanks! There is definitely something neat about seeing a person in their cartoon-ized form. :)

Shobit: Thanks! I think a part of the reason vectors can look better than the originals is because cartoon-forms tend to cover up any blemishes, and I'm not gonna lie, enhancing or taking away from a feature lies in the hands of the artist, lol.

Dazed by the Light I See: Thank you! I think you'll really like the next one - - it's up the girlie alley. :)

L'Etranger: Haha, thank you for setting my mind at ease! I was so confused as to what vector of my face was floating around somewhere, lol. That display picture is my 'gravatar' that shows up when I post comments on blogs hosted outside of blogpost.

As for your question, I love all types of art and have tried all types of art. But this blog of mine centers around my vector art - - which also happens to be the type of art I enjoy the most. :)

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a wonderful comment.I hope to see you again. You have a great blog. I love it. Keep plugging.I will be back.

Good one, Archana....This is my first visit here and I got inspired by the way you write your post with vector art.

Keep going...

Aditya said...

Hey.. Your vector art is really great.. How much you plan to charge for it? Well, I am serious.. I would love to see a vectorized me..

Archana said...

Gigi: Thanks! And yes, I had to leave a comment at you blog cause there's nothing quite like spending the summers people watching in NYC. ;)

Jarlin: Thank you! My blog centers around my artwork, and I think it'd be too dry and lack personality if there weren't any words to go along with it - hence my ramblings alongside my vectors. :)

Aditya: Oh wow, potentially my first customer? :) I have a few ideas as to how/how much I would charge for my vectors. Feel free to drop me an email at desiglaze@gmail.com and we'll discuss it in detail.

Suree said...

i am gonna ask you a Million dollar question, how did you comicized those pics.... :P

Archana said...

Suree: Haha, it's hard to explain without a full out tutorial. If you're interested, check out this particular website (http://www.melissaclifton.com/tutorial-vector.html). In my opinion, it's one of the best vector art tutorials online.
